Abstract: Current geopolitical and economic conditions have a major impact on regional development strategies. Kuzbass is a region with a high concentration of mining industries. These industries were the first to bear the brunt of sanctions restrictions, compression of export markets and the dictatorship of the environmental agenda. Therefore, in modern conditions, new directions for the strategic development of regions are needed. Investments are the main element of strategic development. But the search for investment as the main development resource is complicated by the structural features of the regional economy. System-forming sectors of the region’s economy have traditionally acted as the main investors. But in the context of shrinking export markets for their main products, falling domestic demand and the high cost of attracted sources, investment activity in the region has decreased significantly. In 2022-2023 the ratio of investment in fixed assets to GRP reached a minimum of 18% over the last fifteen-year period. According to the Strategy for the socio-economic development of Kuzbass for the period until 2035, the ratio of investments in fixed capital to GRP by the end of 2024 should be 26.6%. This decline in the future may call into question the feasibility of strategic diversification of the Kuzbass economy. In this article, the author assessed the investment opportunities of the region during the period of structural transformations. For Kuzbass, the search for new growth points and sources of financing is becoming not just a matter of competition for limited resources, but a large-scale problem in the context of the new economic reality.
