Abstract: The article examines the nature, causes and types of unemployment, as well as its consequences for the economy and society. Based on the analysis of statistical data from Rosstat, the Ministry of Labor and other sources for the period 2017–2024, key trends in the development of the Russian labor market are identified. Particular attention is paid to structural unemployment caused by digitalization and automation, which have led to a reduction in demand for low-skilled labor and an increase in the shortage of personnel in high-tech industries. The methods of theoretical analysis, comparative approach and statistical data processing were used, which made it possible to assess the impact of macroeconomic factors (inflation, GDP), microeconomic aspects (youth employment, informal sector) and regional imbalances. The results of the study showed that the unemployment rate in Russia has decreased, but significant structural imbalances remain: the wage gap between IT specialists and workers in traditional sectors, a high share of informal employment, and low readiness of the population for labor mobility. The proposed regulatory measures include improving retraining programs, developing a dual education system, and stimulating regional mobility.
