Abstract: The article presents approaches to studying the role and place of artificial intelligence in the economy and life of society, identifies threats arising in the course of its accelerated development, analyzes the ideas of various authors regarding the future influence of artificial intelligence on the economy and society. The purpose of the study is to determine the specifics of public artificial intelligence, which, in contrast to industrial, plays the role of a public good and, at the same time, a means of its production. The article systematizes approaches to the study of artificial intelligence, presents its existing ones and proposes its author's classification. The specifics of public artificial intelligence are substantiated, its features are shown from the point of view of modern law and ethical standards, the areas of application of public artificial intelligence are highlighted (education, healthcare, "green" energy, urban studies, preservation of natural ecosystems, legal sphere). The increasing role of public artificial intelligence is shown in the expected transition from Industry 4.0 with its concentration on the growth of labor productivity to Industry 5.0 - a human-centric platform. Examples of modern Russian systems of public artificial intelligence used in medicine and education are given.
