Abstract: Mechanical engineering is one of the leading industries in the Altai Territory and determines the vector of economic, social, scientific and technical development of the region. Considering the high importance of the mechanical engineering industry both for the economy in general and for the region in particular, assessing the current state of the industry, problems and prospects for further development is of particular relevance. The article presents an analysis of the state of the mechanical engineering industry in the Altai Territory in a long-term retrospective, and examines the cause-and-effect relationships of the historical problems of the industry. Based on official statistical information, the most important indicators of the efficiency of production and financial activities of regional mechanical engineering enterprises are assessed, the most stable and most vulnerable types of economic activity in the industry are identified in relation to crisis phenomena. The authors paid special attention to the relatively new problem of import dependence for the Russian economy, which arose during the period of strict Western sanctions policies. Based on the analysis, a map of strategic priorities for the development of mechanical engineering enterprises in the Altai Territory was formed, which can serve as the basis for building strategic management systems for mechanical engineering enterprises in the region. The map reflects the strategic goals of the development of machine-building enterprises in the context of business processes covering the main areas of activity.
