Abstract: Social security and protection is a key function of the state in the economy, the implementation of which determines the prospects for sustainable social devel-opment. Improving the system for implementing the social function of the state depends on a comprehensive analysis of trends in social security and protection of the population. In turn, the choice of a system of indicators for such an analysis is important from the point of view of covering not only social, but also economic indicators associated with a stable expanded reproduction of human capital. The importance of selecting indicators for the analysis of the social security system is growing in the context of market transformations in the Russian economy, in which the function of the social function of the state is also undergoing a transformation. The hypothesis of the study presented in this article is a comprehensive presentation of the problems of developing the system of social security and protection of the population, which can be formed using a balanced system of financial, demographic, and economic indicators. In accordance with the hypothesis, this article presents indicators for analyzing the problems and prospects for the development of the social security and protection system in the Russian economy
