Abstract: The Russian economy is at a new stage of technological development associated with the modernization of the basic export-oriented sectors of the economy. In such development, its main subjects are raw materials, energy, machine-building clusters – consumers of new equipment and technologies. In the new economy, with its convergent technological basis for modernization, the traditional cluster structure loses its efficiency and no longer leads to an increase in national competitiveness. It is being replaced by network clusters that unite manufacturers of products created on the basis of converged technologies. This forces us to reconsider the existing approaches to the study of the clustering of the economy as a form of relocation of productive forces, increasing productivity and competitiveness. For this purpose, this article analyzes approaches to defining the essence and economic role of clusters, highlights the most successful elements of global network clusters of convergent technologies, and proposes directions for the development of network clustering in the Russian economy.
