Abstract: The study of the state of the population is the most important direction in the mod-ern Russian economy. Population change, population reproduction, fertility, mor-tality, age structure, marital status, ethnic composition, educational level, economic activity, professional and industrial composition, population migration - all these key issues are essential for characterizing the country's economy, and for further forecasting the prospects its development. In the USSR, the study of the population as one of the key factors of the country's economic development took place in several stages and directly depended on the political situation in the country. The article describes the study of the population in general and the study of the female population in particular, as the most important component of the economic devel-opment of the USSR, analyzes the problem of solving the women's issue in the USSR, expressed in the involvement of the female population in the economic development of the country, the degree of participation of women in the economy of the USSR historical development.
