Abstract: Credit relations in their development reflect, on the one hand, the level of productive forces and the demand for capital, on the other, the features of the existing system of regulation of the national economy. In this regard, it is relevant to analyze the genesis of the system of credit relations in Russia in order to understand the reasons for the continuing problems of their development associated with the monopolization of the banking system and high interest rates, with the short-term movement of borrowed capital, with the weakness of the layer of banks financing "breakthrough" and technologically advanced industries. The analysis of the genesis of the development of the Russian credit system is also dictated by the need to rethink the role of the state in its regulation and take into account the historical experience of its successes and failures. The limited effectiveness of the direct transfer of foreign models of regulation of credit relations and banking system to the transforming Russian economy also predetermines the analysis of the national characteristics of this process.
