Abstract: The article discusses the possibilities of using brownfields – areas of mineral de-posits close to depletion, after mining and processing of minerals in Slovakia. With regard to the prospects for further use, brownfields represent underutilized or unused land, including office buildings, warehouse and factory facilities. These types of abandoned areas and depleted deposits are often accompanied by envi-ronmental burdens in various forms and levels of contamination of individual com-ponents of the environment. Brownfields, the degree of degradation and pollution of which is directly determined by the way in which mineral resources are mined and processed, are so-called "toxic" investments that do not benefit the region where mineral deposits are currently located close to depletion. The article points to the current state of the environmental burden imposed on the regions as a result of the extraction and processing of minerals – a negative determinant of their development. By prioritizing negative and positive factors that determine the possible use of depleted deposits after the extraction and processing of mineral resources, the article gives a classification of their possible further use.
