Abstract: Mineral resources in modern society have a double role. On the one hand, they are the wealth of nations and of all mankind, which must be protected and used responsibly, taking into account the interests of future generations. On the other hand, the bowels are the object of the economic activity of people, which has shaped our modern civilization. These two-sided mineral resources are used only through the raw material policy that defines the goals of the use of national mineral resources for the long-term needs and social development of society, taking into account sustainable development. The development of a raw material policy as the most important institution for the regulation of innovation means the recognition of the fact of the need for mineral resources for the production of goods of the highest technological level. Such a policy should cover the entire range of economic relations regarding the extraction, processing and natural resources – starting from investments in geological surveys and ending with waste disposal and reclamation. The main content of the raw material economy is to stimulate domestic and attract foreign sources, to determine the rules for the protection and rational use of mineral resources in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. Despite the fact that Slovakia is relatively rich in minerals, the last modernization of the foundations of raw materials policy was in 2004. Renewal of this important institution of economic regulation should not only be a set of long-term goals.
