Abstract: The concept of sustainable development is an important topic in the global concept of development. It means a combination of social, economic, environmental and institutional development of social relations, forming a whole complex. An integral part of these relations are the economic relations in the field of subsoil use. This article is devoted to the analysis of the subsoil use regulation system that has been developed in Slovakia as a part of the transition to sustainable development, the identification of problems related to assessing the role of the state in environmental protection, exploitation and proceeding of mineral raw materials. An important issue discussed in the article is the reduction in the resource intensity of the economy, taking into account the reduction in the reserves of energy sources ready for extraction in Slovak Republic. Extraction, processing and use of energy raw materials are the essential requirements for every country to ensure its economic development. At the institutional level, adherence to the goal of transition to sustainable development pursued by the government and society of the Slovak Republic must be linked to balancing energy production and exploitation of the entire subsoil complex on the one hand, and environmental protection, taking into account the interests of future generations, on the other. For this purpose, the article analyzes the legal provisions and strategic documents on the regulation of economic relations in the field of subsoil use, developed in Slovakia. As a result, it was concluded that with the development of technologies for the extraction and processing of raw materials, society's attention to environmental protection is increasing, which contributes to a better balancing of the needs of the economy for natural resources, and of the whole society – in a comfortable and safe living environment.
