Abstract: The electronic industry is the locomotive for the development of industrial production of the participants of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It represents the main leverage of economic development when the region moves up the value chain using modern technological solutions to reduce production costs and increase competitiveness. The countries of Southeast Asia – Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam – are turning into attractive investment concentration zones for global electronics manufacturers. However, despite the high rates of gross output and export volume, the electronics industry in Vietnam has a number of problems, such as insufficiently added value, spontaneously formed structure, import dependence in production, lack of a scientifically based development strategy, and low modern standards the labour force quality. In the framework of this article, the authors show the drivers of development of the electronic industry in Vietnam, consider the problems that the young sector of the economy faces to varying degrees in the context of globalization. The analysis results and recommendations formulated by the authors can be used for further development of a strategy for the electronic industry in Vietnam and the import substitution program in the country's industry. In the study conducted by the authors, methods of quantitative analysis of data from statistical and officially published sources were used, the Thailand experience of solving the problems of modern industries development is considered (as the country with similar geographical conditions and level of development to Vietnam).
