Abstract: The stock market is an important mechanism of the market economy, which provides an opportunity to attract investments and redistribute capital to innovative sector. One of the sources of innovations investment in the financial market may be the savings of the population. Currently, mutual funds are becoming one of the most popular ways to invest money. Mutual funds, as a tool for collective investment, are a relatively new, promising form of investing cash by Russian investors, including those with no experience in investing, since mutual funds are an affordable financial tool. The article describes the main institutions that form the collective investment system. It is noted that mutual investment funds have a number of advantages, as well as disadvantages in comparison with other collective investment organizations. The authors highlighted the main qualities of mutual investment funds, which determine their attractiveness, which include income, the opportunity for an investor to enter new investment markets, and thorough regulation of mutual investment funds. The characterization of investment institutions and their comparison on the main parameters, as well as the characteristics of investment instruments of the mutual investment fund, were carried out.
