Abstract: The relevance of the research topic is predetermined by the increasing level of eco-nomic losses of the world community as a result of road accidents. Unfortunately, the Russian Federation is no exception. The situation with road traffic accidents here in recent years has become particularly acute and now Russia is many times behind the best in the world standards of road safety.The article analyzes the meth-odological approaches to the assessment of economic losses from road accidents in the Russian Federation and abroad, including in terms of meeting the needs of the main groups of users of these methods. The results of the study showed that in the developed countries of the world different approaches to assessing the cost of damage from road accidents are used. Different methodological approaches deter-mine the receipt of different and, in most cases, completely incomparable results, which indicates the lack of operationality of the calculation methods used. In addi-tion, the applied technologies for calculating economic losses from road accidents do not take into account the specific needs of different groups of users of these methods, which determines the high relevance of the development for the practical use of special methods for calculating damage that meet the expectations and re-quirements of their consumers.
