Abstract: At present, when digitalization and globalization are everywhere in all sectors of economy and social sphere, transforming political relations, science-intensive in-dustries and technological innovations come to the fore. The formation of science-and-technology space for the national economy is the most important objective for ensuring competitiveness in foreign markets of goods and services, labor and cap-ital. The assessment of the science-and-technology space in particular will provide an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of science-and-technology space in the country and regions and determine the list of measures to improve it. The purpose of the study is to review the theoretical and methodological ap-proaches to assessing the science-and-technology space for further elaboration of an author’s assessment methodology. To achieve this goal it is necessary to review the existing theoretical and methodological approaches to assessing the science-and-technology space, determine the most preferred approach to assessing it, and study the evaluation techniques that implement the selected approach to assessing the science-and-technology space. The following methods are applied: synthesis, comparative and critical analysis, deductive method. As a result, we identify the most appropriate approach to assessing the science-and-technology space and an-alyze evaluation techniques that implement this approach. The obtained results en-sure the development of studies of domestic researchers in the field of science-and-technology space and produce a comprehensive assessment of the science-and-technology space to adjust the national and regional policy to improve it. Data de-scribed in the article will help form a list of econometric modeling tools and param-eters for assessing the science-and-technology space of Russia in further studies.
