Abstract: Under the conditions of technological transition, significant changes occur in the existing economic system, in the interrelations between its elements, principles of existence and functioning, which causes the appearance of structural changes and shifts. The latter, in turn, lead to the need to restructure relations both within the system of the national economy and with systems from the outside. Transfor-mational processes occurring in economic structures, to a greater extent reveal their character through the category of structural shift. This article is devoted to the analysis of the main scientific approaches to the study of the essence of structural changes in the system of the national economy, identifying their causes, factors, conditions and consequences for macroeconomics in a situation of intensive technological development. Consideration of the essence of structural changes involves the analysis of the structure of the economy itself, which is characterized by heterogeneity, the corresponding hierarchy and the proportions between its components.
